How to Optimize Your Website for AI Search: A Practical Guide

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 9 min read

Short answer: To optimize for AI search, make sure your pages are indexed, answer each question in the first two or three sentences, cover the related subtopics around it, show who wrote the page, and back up facts with sources. Google says no special optimization is required for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and no one can guarantee that an AI tool will cite your site.

In this guide

AI search means search tools that read several web pages and then write one answer. Examples are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

You will see three short names for the work around it. AEO is writing clear answers to real questions. GEO is making your content easy for AI tools to understand and use. AIO is sometimes used for AI optimization, but it can also mean AI Overviews, so I avoid it. These names overlap a lot. I explain the difference in my guides to what GEO is and answer engine optimization.

What does Google say?

Google’s guide for site owners, AI features and your website, makes four points that matter:

  • A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search to be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Specific optimization is not required. The normal SEO fundamentals still apply.
  • You do not need special schema.org markup to appear.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out”, which means they run several related searches across subtopics before writing the answer.

So AI search is built on top of SEO. If your page is not crawled and indexed, nothing else on this list matters.

8 steps to optimize for AI search

Step 1: Make sure your key pages are indexed

Check your important pages in Google Search Console. Fix blocked, noindexed or broken pages first. My technical SEO checklist for WordPress covers the basics. If you need expert help with this and the steps below, see my AI search optimization service.

Step 2: Put the answer first

Answer the main question in the first two or three sentences. Then explain. A person gets value at once, and a machine can lift the answer as it is. I show examples in my guide on how to structure content so AI assistants can cite it.

Step 3: Cover the subtopics around the question

Because tools may run several related searches, a single thin page is a weak source. Build a small cluster: one main guide and several pages that answer the related questions, all linked together. I explain how in my semantic SEO guide.

Step 4: Use clear headings and self-contained sections

Write headings as real questions or plain titles. Make each section understandable on its own, so a tool can pick one passage without the rest of the page.

Step 5: Make your brand and author clear

Use the same brand name, author name and short description on your site and your public profiles. Add an author line, an author box and a “last updated” date. This helps people and machines see who is behind the page.

Step 6: Check that the right bots can reach you

Review your robots.txt and make a deliberate choice about which crawlers to allow. Run a page through my free AI Search Readiness Checker or follow my AI search readiness checklist.

Step 7: Add schema that matches the page

Schema is not required, but accurate markup for the page type and author can help machines read the page. It must match the visible text. See schema markup for AI search: what actually helps.

Step 8: Add real experience and sources

Generic text is everywhere. Add your own examples, screenshots and mistakes you have seen. Link to official sources for facts, and update old pages with the date.

What is still unproven?

Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how each tool picks its sources, and the rules can change. I treat these as unproven: llms.txt as a citation factor (see what llms.txt is and whether you need it), any trick that promises a citation, and any tool that claims to “rank” you inside ChatGPT.

How to measure it honestly

  • Google: Google says sites that appear in AI features are counted in the normal Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type.
  • Other AI tools: check the referral sources in your analytics for visits from AI tools, where they show up.
  • Spot checks: ask the questions your customers ask in a few AI tools from time to time.

Treat all of this as a signal, not a score. Answers change from one day to the next.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping SEO basics and jumping straight to “AI tricks”
  • Writing long introductions before the answer
  • Publishing one thin page instead of a connected cluster
  • Adding schema that does not match the visible text
  • Blocking or allowing AI crawlers without thinking about it
  • Paying for fake mentions or spam profiles

FAQ

Do I need special optimization for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says specific optimization is not required. Your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and the normal SEO fundamentals still apply.

Is AI search optimization the same as SEO?

No, but it builds on SEO. SEO gets your pages crawled, indexed and ranked. AI search work focuses on clear answers, clear structure and a clear brand so AI tools can understand and use your content.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT or Gemini will cite my site?

No. These tools decide what to cite, and the choice can change from one answer to the next. Anyone who guarantees a citation is guessing.

Should I rewrite all my old posts?

No. Start with the pages that matter most for your business. Rewrite the first few sentences, fix the headings, add sources and update the date.
