Short answer: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are AI features inside Google Search. They pull pages from Google’s Search index and show links to support the answer. To be eligible, your page must be indexed and able to show a snippet. Google says no special markup or files are needed, and that optimizing for these features is still SEO. No one can guarantee that your page will appear.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode
AI Overviews show a short AI-written summary at the top of some results pages, with links to pages that support it. AI Mode is a more conversational experience. Google says it is particularly helpful for questions that need more exploration, reasoning or comparison.
Google also says the two may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show can differ.
How they choose pages
Google explains two techniques in its guide, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search:
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): the system uses Google’s core ranking systems to find relevant, up-to-date pages in the Search index, then reads them to write the answer.
- Query fan-out: the model creates several related searches at once to get more information. Google’s example: a question about fixing a lawn full of weeds can lead to searches about herbicides, removing weeds without chemicals and preventing weeds.
This means your page can be used even when it does not match the exact words of the original question. It also means a page that covers a topic well, alongside related pages on your site, has more chances to be useful.
What makes a page eligible
- The page is indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.
- Your site is included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Google has a help page on including or excluding your site. Check that you have not excluded it by mistake.
Google also says that meeting every requirement does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.
What to do
- Get the SEO basics right. Crawlable, indexable, fast pages with clear structure. See my technical SEO checklist for WordPress.
- Write non-commodity content. Add first-hand experience, real examples and your own point of view. Google says this will likely matter most over time.
- Organize the page for readers. Clear headings, short sections and the answer near the top.
- Add useful images and video where they help. Google says its AI features can show images and video too.
- Keep business details accurate if you are local or sell products, such as your Google Business Profile or Merchant Center data.

How to control what appears
AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search, so Googlebot access is the crawling control. To limit what Google shows from your pages, use the standard snippet controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Use them with care, because they can also change how your page looks in normal results.
Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google says it does not affect Search inclusion. See my guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt.
How to measure
Search Console has a Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. Google says it was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. If you do not see it, your site may not have had enough impressions yet. I explain this in how to measure AI search visibility.
Common mistakes
- Adding special files or markup because a blog said it was required
- Making a separate thin page for every possible question variation
- Blocking Googlebot or using nosnippet by accident
- Judging success by one AI answer you saw once
- Trusting tools that claim to know Google’s internal AI metrics
FAQ
How do I get my site into AI Overviews?
You cannot force it. Make sure your pages are indexed and can show a snippet, and create useful, original content. Google says normal SEO best practices apply.
Do I need schema markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add. Structured data is still useful for rich results.
Does AI Overviews traffic show in Search Console?
Yes. Google says AI features are included in Search Console data. The Generative AI performance report gives a dedicated view of impressions.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google provides snippet controls and a Search Console setting for including or excluding your site. Both can change how your site appears, so read Google’s help pages first.
