Short answer: Answer engine optimization (AEO) means writing your page so search engines and AI tools can lift a clear answer from it. Put the question in a heading, answer it in about 40 to 60 words right below, then add the details. It helps visitors get what they need fast, and it makes your content easier for machines to use. It cannot guarantee a featured snippet or an AI citation.
What is AEO in plain words?
People now get answers in many places: featured snippets, voice assistants, Google AI Overviews and AI chat tools. AEO is the habit of writing pages so a clear answer is easy to find in all of them.
It is close to GEO. If you want the full picture of how they differ, read what GEO is and how it differs from SEO.
The answer-first format
Use this pattern for every question you want to answer:
- Question as a heading. Write it the way a person would ask it.
- Short answer. One to three sentences, about 40 to 60 words, that answer the question on their own.
- Details. Steps, examples, exceptions and sources.
Here is a small example.
Heading: Do I need an llms.txt file?
Short answer: No. It is an optional, emerging file, and it is not a confirmed ranking or citation factor. You can add one if you like, but fix your basic SEO first.
See how the answer works even if you read nothing else? That is the goal.
How to find the questions to answer
- Your own inbox and chats. The questions clients ask you are the best source.
- Google Search Console. Look at the queries that already bring impressions.
- People also ask. Search your topic and note the related questions.
Pick one main question per page. Put smaller related questions in the FAQ at the end.
Match the answer to the question type
- “What is…” Give a one or two sentence definition.
- “How to…” Give a short summary, then numbered steps.
- “Which is better…” Give the verdict and the reason, then compare.
- “Should I…” or “Is it…” Start with yes or no, then explain when it changes.
- “Best…” or “types of…” Use a short list, then explain each item.
Keep answers honest and easy to check
Do not guess. If something is not known, say so. If a fact comes from Google or another official source, name it and link to it. Show the author and the last updated date. This builds trust with people and gives machines clear signals. My guide on how to structure content so AI assistants can cite it covers these steps in detail.
Add a visible FAQ
End your page with three to five real questions and short answers. Keep them visible on the page, not hidden. If you add FAQ schema, the text must match what people see. Read more in my guide to schema markup for AI search.
How to see if it is working
- Check Search Console for more impressions and clicks on question-style queries.
- Look for your page in featured snippets and “People also ask” for your target question.
- Ask your topic questions in a few AI tools now and then, and note which sources they use.
Results change often, so treat these as signals, not scores. If you want help with this, see my AI search optimization service.
Common mistakes
- Writing answers that are too long to quote
- Answering a question the page title never asked
- Starting with a long story before the answer
- Adding an FAQ with questions nobody asks
- Promising a featured snippet or an AI mention
