Is SEO Dead With AI? What Has Changed and What to Do

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 8 min read

Short answer: No, SEO is not dead. Search is changing, and some clicks now go to AI answers, but AI tools and Google still depend on web pages that are findable, helpful and trustworthy. The basics still matter. What changes is how you write, what you measure and which queries you target.

In this guide

Why people say SEO is dead

People have said “SEO is dead” for many years: after every big Google update, after social media, after voice search. This time the worry is AI. Answers now appear at the top of Google, and people also ask ChatGPT and other tools instead of searching.

The worry is real in one way: if an answer is shown on the results page, fewer people may click. I cannot give you a number for your site, and nobody can without your data. But “fewer clicks for some queries” is not the same as “SEO is dead”.

What has changed

  • More answer surfaces. AI Overviews, AI Mode and chat tools answer questions directly. See Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for site owners.
  • Simple, factual queries are the most exposed. A quick definition is easy for an AI to give. A comparison, a service decision or a hands-on guide still needs a real page.
  • Brand and trust matter more. AI tools often point to sources they can clearly understand. See entity SEO.
  • Measurement is wider. Rankings and clicks are no longer the only signals. See how to measure AI search visibility.

What has not changed

  • Pages must be crawlable and indexable to be used by search or by AI search tools.
  • Helpful, accurate, people-first content is still the goal. See E-E-A-T explained.
  • People still search, still compare options and still hire experts.
  • Technical health, clear structure and good internal links still help every system understand your site.

Google’s own documentation for AI features points site owners to these same basics. See how to optimize your website for AI search.

6 things to do now

1. Fix the technical basics

Make sure your important pages are indexed, fast and not blocked by mistake. Start with the technical SEO checklist for WordPress. If you want an expert to check it, see my SEO and technical SEO service.

2. Write answer-first content

Put the direct answer at the top, then explain. It helps readers, search and AI tools. See answer engine optimization.

3. Go deeper than a summary

An AI can summarize basics. It cannot replace your real experience, examples, original screenshots or clear opinions. Add them.

4. Target queries where clicks still matter

Comparison, “best for” and service-intent queries, and questions that need a tool or a step-by-step process, are more likely to lead to a visit. Match search intent carefully.

5. Make your brand easy to understand

Use a clear About page, a real author, consistent names and links to your profiles. This helps both people and machines know who you are.

6. Allow the crawlers you want

Check your robots.txt. If you want to appear in AI search, do not block its crawlers by accident. See AI crawlers and robots.txt.

How to measure it

  • Search Console for impressions, clicks and indexing
  • Analytics for referrals from AI tools
  • Manual checks of your main questions in a few tools, noting which pages are cited
  • Leads and sales, not only traffic

Treat AI mentions as a bonus signal. Nobody can guarantee citations.

FAQ

Will AI replace SEO?

AI changes where answers appear. It still needs sources, and those sources still need to be found and trusted. The work changes, but it does not disappear.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

They overlap a lot. GEO focuses on making content easy for AI tools to use. See what GEO is.

Should I stop doing SEO and only do AI optimization?

No. Good SEO is the base for both.

Is it still worth starting SEO now?

Yes, if you are patient and focus on useful content and a solid site. No one can promise a ranking or a result date.
