Search engine algorithm workflow linking crawl, index and rank stages

How Search Engine Algorithms Work: A Simple Explanation With an Example

Short answer: A search engine algorithm is the set of rules and systems a search engine uses to find pages, store them and decide which ones to show for a search. Google does not use one single algorithm. It uses many ranking systems that look at the meaning of the query, the relevance and quality of pages, usability and context such as location. Nobody outside Google knows the full recipe, so focus on helpful pages and a technically sound site.

In this guide

The three steps: crawl, index, rank

  1. Crawl. A bot follows links to find pages. Read more in my guide to search engine crawling.
  2. Index. The search engine processes the page and stores it if it is useful and allowed.
  3. Rank. When someone searches, the engine picks matching pages from its index and orders them.

A simple example

Someone searches “how to fix a hacked WordPress site”. The engine works out the meaning: this person has a problem and wants steps. It looks for pages that match that need, then prefers pages that are clear, trustworthy and easy to use on a phone. A short sales page with no steps is less likely to be a good match than a step-by-step guide.

What ranking systems look at

Google explains that its results depend on several things:

  • The meaning of the query. What does the person want?
  • Relevance. Does the page cover that topic?
  • Quality. Is the content reliable and helpful? Links from other sites are one signal.
  • Usability. Is the page easy to use, fast and mobile friendly?
  • Context. Location and settings can change the results.

Google also has systems that fight spam. Bing and other search engines work in a similar way, with their own details.

Algorithm updates

Google changes its systems many times a year. Larger “core updates” happen a few times a year and can move rankings. Google’s advice after an update is to focus on helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than looking for a trick. If your traffic drops, check Search Console, compare with the update date and review your content before you change anything.

What this means for you

  • Match search intent with every page
  • Write original content with real experience
  • Keep the site fast, secure and easy to crawl. See my technical SEO checklist
  • Earn links naturally
  • Do not chase every update or use tricks
