Short answer: SEO competitor analysis means finding the sites that rank for the searches you want, then studying what they cover, how their pages are built and who links to them. Your real SEO competitors are the sites on page one, not always your business rivals. Use what you learn to find gaps you can fill with better, clearer pages. Do not copy them.

Step 1: Find your real competitors
Search your main keywords in Google. The sites that keep showing up on page one are your SEO competitors. They might be directories, publishers or blogs, not only companies that sell what you sell. Write down 3 to 5 sites that appear most often.
Step 2: Compare keywords
List the keywords they rank for. A paid tool such as Semrush or Ahrefs shows this quickly. Without a paid tool, search your target keywords and note the page titles and headings that rank. Look for topics they cover that you do not, called a keyword gap. For a guide to choosing the right terms, read how to do keyword research.
Step 3: Compare content
Open the top pages and ask:
- What question does the page answer, and how fast?
- What format is it: guide, list, tool, comparison?
- What is missing: examples, screenshots, recent data, clear steps?
- How is it organised: headings, tables, FAQ?
This tells you what Google thinks searchers want. See search intent for how to read it.
Step 4: Compare links
Check which sites link to your competitors. Look for patterns, such as guest posts, directories, news mentions or resource pages. Focus on links you can earn honestly. I explain what makes a link worth getting in how to check whether a backlink is worth getting.
Step 5: Check the technical side
Compare page speed on mobile, site structure, use of schema and how well their pages work on a phone. Technical strengths do not guarantee rankings, but big technical weaknesses on your side are easy wins. My technical SEO checklist covers what to check.
Step 6: Turn it into a plan
- Pick 5 to 10 topics where competitors rank and you do not
- Decide how your page will be better: clearer, more complete, more recent or more helpful
- List the links and mentions you could realistically earn
- Fix technical issues that hold your pages back
- Review again in a few months

Common mistakes
- Copying a competitor’s page instead of improving on it
- Only analysing business rivals, not search competitors
- Trusting a tool’s traffic numbers as exact
- Chasing every keyword a competitor ranks for
- Doing the analysis once and never again
FAQ
What is SEO competitor analysis?
It is studying the sites that rank for your target searches to find gaps and opportunities.
How do I find my SEO competitors?
Search your main keywords and note which sites appear on page one most often.
Do I need paid tools?
No. Manual searching and Search Console give you a good start. Paid tools save time and show more data.
How often should I do it?
Do a full review when you plan a site or a new topic, and check again every few months.
Is it okay to copy what competitors do?
Learn from them, but write your own content. Copying does not help and can hurt your site.
