SEO-friendly URL example showing a short lowercase slug with hyphens and a readable URL structure

SEO-Friendly URL Structure: Best Practices for WordPress

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 6 min read

Short answer: A good URL is short, readable, lowercase, uses hyphens between words and describes the page. Example: /wordpress-security-checklist/. Avoid long strings, random numbers, session IDs and unnecessary parameters. Choose a clean structure when you launch, because changing a URL later needs a 301 redirect and can cost you traffic if done wrong.

In this guide

8 URL best practices

  1. Keep it short and readable. People should be able to guess the topic from the URL.
  2. Use words, not codes. /local-seo-checklist/ is clearer than /p=2456.
  3. Use hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words, not underscores.
  4. Use lowercase. URLs can be case sensitive, so mixed case can create duplicates.
  5. Include the main topic naturally. One clear keyword is enough. Do not stuff the URL.
  6. Avoid dates and unneeded parameters. Dates make content look old. Tracking and session parameters can create duplicate URLs.
  7. Use a logical folder structure. For example, /services/local-seo/ shows that the page is a service.
  8. Keep one URL per page. Use a canonical tag if the same content must be reachable at several addresses.

How to set it up in WordPress

  1. Go to Settings, Permalinks.
  2. Choose Post name.
  3. When you write a post, edit the slug before you publish. Remove filler words and keep the main topic.
  4. Do not change the permalink structure on a live site unless you add redirects.

Changing an existing URL

Only change a URL if there is a real reason. If you do, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, update internal links and update your sitemap. Watch Search Console for errors in the following weeks. See the post-migration SEO checklist for what to check.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the default number-based permalink
  • Very long slugs copied from the full title
  • Changing slugs without redirects
  • Using underscores or capital letters
  • Letting filters or tracking parameters create many versions of one page

FAQ

Do URLs affect SEO?

Slightly. A clear URL helps people and search engines understand the page, but content quality matters far more.

Should a URL include the keyword?

It helps to include the main topic in plain words. Do not force extra keywords in.

How long should a URL be?

Short enough to read easily. There is no exact limit, but shorter is usually better.

Should I use a date in the URL?

For evergreen content, no. A date can make the page look outdated and makes updating harder.

Is it safe to change my URLs?

It can be, with correct 301 redirects. Without them you can lose traffic and links.
