Google Knowledge Panel concept showing an entity profile with website, description and profile links

Google Knowledge Panel: What It Is and How to Claim One

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 8 min read

Short answer: A Google knowledge panel is the information box that can appear for a person, business or other entity. You cannot request or buy one. Google generates them automatically. If one already exists for you, you can claim it by verifying, then suggest edits. Verifying does not guarantee that a panel will appear. What you can do is make your brand clear and consistent online.

In this guide

What a knowledge panel is

A knowledge panel is a box on the search results page with an overview of key facts and links about something Google recognizes as a distinct entity, such as a well-known person, organization, event or place. Google introduced the Knowledge Graph in 2012 with the idea of “things, not strings”, so that search can understand what a name refers to.

Knowledge panels are different from a Google Business Profile. A Business Profile is a listing you create for a local business. See my guide to optimizing your Google Business Profile.

Can you get one?

You cannot apply for one or pay for one. Google’s panels are generated automatically from information it finds across the web. Google has said that whether a business’s information appears in a panel is decided by a variety of factors, and that verifying does not guarantee that it will appear.

Not everyone has one, and a panel can change or disappear. Do not trust anyone who sells a guaranteed knowledge panel.

How to claim and edit one

If a panel already exists for you or your organization, you may be able to claim it:

  1. Search for your name or organization on Google.
  2. Look for the prompt below the panel about claiming or getting verified. The wording and buttons can change, so follow what Google shows you.
  3. Complete the verification. Google asks you to sign in with an official account connected to the entity. Which accounts qualify depends on the entity, so read Google’s instructions.
  4. After verification, you can suggest factual changes and a featured image. Google reviews your suggestions. It does not apply them automatically.

Some parts cannot be changed, such as certain linked snippets. Google may not accept edits that are not accurate or publicly known. Smaller businesses can manage their information through a Google Business Profile.

How to make your entity clearer

These steps do not promise a panel. They make it easier for Google and AI tools to understand who you are:

  1. Use the same name and details everywhere. Your site, profiles and listings should agree.
  2. Build a clear About page and author pages. See my Who Is Hridoy Ahmed? page for an example.
  3. Link your site and real profiles to each other.
  4. Add structured data that matches the page. Google documents Organization structured data. See how to add schema markup to a WordPress page.
  5. Publish useful work and earn real mentions. Do not buy fake mentions or profiles.

I explain these steps in more detail in entity SEO and in my guide on how to find your name on Google and build a clear brand identity. If you want an expert to review how your site and profiles describe you, see my SEO and technical SEO service.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a “guaranteed” knowledge panel
  • Creating pages about yourself on public sites with made-up facts
  • Using different names, bios or logos on different profiles
  • Expecting verification to create a panel
  • Asking for edits that are not accurate or publicly known

FAQ

How do I get a Google knowledge panel?

You cannot request one. Make your brand clear and consistent online, and build a real presence. Google decides whether to show a panel.

Can I edit my knowledge panel directly?

No. After verification you can suggest changes, and Google reviews them.

Is a knowledge panel the same as a Google Business Profile?

No. A Business Profile is a listing you manage for a local business. A knowledge panel is generated by Google for entities it recognizes.

Does a knowledge panel help SEO?

It can make your brand more visible in search. No one can promise that it will improve rankings.
