How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 7 min read

Short answer: To optimize your Google Business Profile, claim and verify it, choose the right primary category, keep your name, address and phone number accurate, add services, hours and real photos, and respond to reviews. Keep it updated. A complete, accurate profile helps Google match you to local searches, but no one can guarantee a position on the map.

In this guide: 1. Claim and verify | 2. Business name and categories | 3. Contact details and hours | 4. Services and description | 5. Photos | 6. Posts and updates | 7. Reviews | Common mistakes | FAQ

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps. For many local businesses it is the first thing a customer sees. If you want an expert to set it up, see my Local SEO service.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one. Google will ask you to verify that you run the business. Verification options depend on your business and country. You cannot fully manage the profile until you verify it.

2. Use your real business name and the right categories

  • Use the name customers know you by, as it appears on your sign and website. Do not add keywords or a city to the name. This can lead to a suspended profile.
  • Choose the one primary category that best describes your main business. Add secondary categories only if they are true.

3. Add accurate contact details and hours

  • Enter your address, phone number and website exactly as they appear on your site. See my guide on NAP consistency.
  • If you serve customers at their location and do not have a public storefront, set a service area and hide your address.
  • Set regular hours and update special hours for holidays.

4. Add services and a clear description

List your main services and products in plain words. Write a short description of what you do, who you serve and where. Keep it factual. Do not stuff keywords or add links and phone numbers in the description.

5. Add real photos

Upload clear photos of your business, team, work and products. Use real images, not stock photos. Replace old photos if the business has changed.

6. Post updates and keep the profile current

Use posts and updates for offers, events or news. They give visitors current information. Check your profile regularly, because customers and other people can suggest edits.

7. Collect and answer reviews

Ask happy customers for honest reviews and respond to all of them politely. Read my guide on how to get more Google reviews the right way.

Common mistakes

  • Adding keywords to the business name
  • Choosing too many or the wrong categories
  • Showing a home address when you are a service-area business
  • Using different details on your profile and website
  • Creating duplicate profiles
  • Buying or faking reviews

FAQ

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a profile is free.

How long does verification take?

It depends on the method and your business. Follow the steps Google shows in your profile.

Can I rank in Google Maps without a website?

A profile can appear without one, but a website gives Google and customers more information.

Will optimizing my profile put me at the top of the map?

It improves your chances, but nobody can guarantee a position. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence.
