Short answer: A business usually does not show in Google Maps because the profile is missing, unverified, suspended or incomplete, the category or address is wrong, or the business is far from the searcher or has weak local signals. Search your exact business name first. Then check verification, status, categories and details in your Google Business Profile.
In this guide: 1. Check if it exists | 2. Verification and status | 3. Category and details | 4. Duplicates | 5. Why you may not rank high | 6. Other map apps | FAQ
1. Check whether your profile exists
Search your exact business name and city on Google and in Maps. If nothing appears, you may not have a profile, or it may not be live. Sign in to the Google account that manages it and check the dashboard.
2. Check verification and status
- Unverified: an unverified profile has limited visibility. Complete verification.
- Suspended: Google can suspend profiles that break its guidelines, for example keywords in the business name or a fake address. Read the notice and follow the reinstatement steps.
- Marked closed: make sure the profile is not set to closed by mistake.
3. Check categories and details
- Choose a primary category that matches what customers search for.
- Make sure your address, phone number and service area are correct. See NAP consistency.
- Add services, hours and photos. An empty profile gives Google little to work with.
4. Look for duplicates
A second profile for the same business, or an old profile at a previous address, can cause confusion. Search for your phone number and old addresses. Ask Google to merge or remove duplicates through the profile tools.
5. Why you appear but not at the top
Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. You can improve relevance with accurate categories and services, and prominence with reviews, citations and a good website. Results also change by searcher location and search wording.
6. Other map apps
Being on Google does not mean you are on other maps. Check Bing Places and Apple Maps separately. My Local SEO service covers Google, Bing and Apple listings.
FAQ
Why can I see my business only when I search the exact name?
That usually means the listing exists but is not strong enough for general searches. Improve categories, details, reviews and website signals.
Can I hide my home address?
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. Set a service area and hide the address in your profile.
How long until a new profile shows?
It varies. After verification, it can take time. I cannot give a fixed number.
Do I need a website?
Not to appear, but a website helps customers and gives Google more information.
Still not showing? I run a local audit, find the cause and fix it. See my Local SEO services.
