NAP Consistency: What It Is and How to Fix It

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 5 min read

Short answer: NAP stands for name, address and phone number. NAP consistency means your business shows the same NAP on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory or map listing. To fix it, choose one official format, audit where your details appear and correct each listing that differs.

In this guide: 1. What NAP is | 2. Why it matters | 3. How to audit | 4. How to fix | 5. Keep it consistent | Common mistakes | FAQ

1. What NAP is

NAP is the core contact data of a local business: name, address and phone number. Many local SEOs also check the website address as part of the same set.

2. Why consistency matters

Search engines gather information about your business from many places. If the details disagree, they have to guess which is correct, and customers may go to the wrong address or call a dead number. Small formatting differences are usually fine. Real differences, such as an old address or another business name, are the problem.

3. How to audit your NAP

  1. Write your official NAP exactly as it should appear.
  2. Check your website: header, footer, contact page and schema.
  3. Check your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Maps listing.
  4. Search for your phone number and old addresses to find forgotten listings.
  5. List every site with a mismatch in a sheet.

4. How to fix mismatches

  • Edit the listing yourself where you can claim it.
  • Ask the site owner for an update where you cannot.
  • Remove or merge duplicates.
  • Fix the most visible listings first: Google, Bing, Apple Maps and your website.

5. Keep it consistent

  • Use one format for abbreviations such as “Street” or “St”.
  • Use one main phone number across your listings. If you use tracking numbers, keep the main number as the primary number.
  • Update every listing when you move or change your name.
  • Match your website’s visible NAP and its local business schema.

My guide to local citations explains where these listings usually appear.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving an old address on a directory
  • Using a different business name on social profiles
  • Putting the phone number only in an image
  • Changing details on your website but not on your listings

FAQ

Does “St.” vs “Street” matter?

Usually not for search engines, but keeping one format is cleaner and easier to check.

Do I need NAP on every page?

Put it in the footer or contact page as text, so people and search engines can read it.

What if I serve customers at their location?

Hide your address in Google Business Profile and set a service area. Keep your name and phone number consistent.

How often should I check?

Check twice a year, and after any move or rename.
