Short answer: The most widely used SEO plugins for WordPress are Rank Math, Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, SEOPress and The SEO Framework. All of them can handle titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and schema. Pick one, set it up well and do not run two at once. The plugin helps, but it does not rank your site on its own. I use Rank Math on this site.
In this guide: 1. What an SEO plugin does | 2. Five common options | 3. How to choose | 4. Setup tips | Common mistakes | FAQ
1. What an SEO plugin does
An SEO plugin gives you controls inside WordPress for things that are hard to do by hand:
- Title tags and meta descriptions
- XML sitemaps
- Canonical URLs and noindex settings
- Schema markup
- Breadcrumbs, redirects and social sharing tags (features vary by plugin)
It does not write good content, build links or fix a slow site for you.
2. Five common options
- Rank Math. Feature-rich, with many modules and schema options. It can feel busy at first. This is the one I use.
- Yoast SEO. One of the best-known plugins, with a simple interface and readability checks.
- All in One SEO. A full set of tools with a guided setup wizard.
- SEOPress. A lighter option that focuses on core SEO settings.
- The SEO Framework. A minimal, automated plugin with fewer settings to manage.
Features and what is free or paid change over time. Check each plugin’s page for current details before you decide.
3. How to choose
- Do you want simple or detailed controls? Beginners often prefer fewer settings.
- Do you need schema options, redirects or local SEO tools? Compare what each plugin offers on its free plan.
- Is it maintained? Look at recent updates and support.
- Is it light? Test your site speed after installing.
4. Setup tips
- Use only one SEO plugin.
- Run the setup wizard, then review the settings yourself.
- Check that your site is not set to noindex after launch.
- Check that your schema is not duplicated by your theme or another plugin.
- Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.
My technical SEO checklist for WordPress shows what to review after setup. If you want help configuring it properly, see my technical SEO service.
Common mistakes
- Running two SEO plugins at the same time
- Trusting a green score instead of checking the page yourself
- Leaving default titles and descriptions untouched
- Duplicate schema from the theme and the plugin
- Forgetting to remove noindex after launch
FAQ
Do I need an SEO plugin?
It is not required, but it makes titles, sitemaps and schema much easier to manage in WordPress.
Which SEO plugin is best?
There is no single best one for everyone. Choose the one whose features and interface suit you, and set it up carefully.
Can I switch SEO plugins later?
Yes. Most plugins can import settings from others. Take a backup first and check titles, descriptions and redirects afterwards.
Will an SEO plugin make my site rank?
No. It helps with the technical setup. Rankings depend on content, links, site quality and many other factors.
