Short answer: There is no fixed number of backlinks you need to rank. It depends on how strong the competition is for your keyword. The best way to get a rough idea is to look at the pages already ranking, count how many different sites link to them, and compare the quality. A few relevant links can beat many weak ones.
Why nobody can give you one number
Google has never said “you need 50 links”. Rankings depend on many things: your content, your site’s trust, how well the page matches the search, technical health and links. A page for a rare topic may rank with no links at all. A page for a very competitive topic may need many strong ones.
Be careful with anyone who promises “100 backlinks and you will rank”. They cannot know that.
How to estimate it for your keyword
- Search your keyword and open the top 5 results.
- Check their backlinks. Use an SEO tool to see how many different websites (referring domains) link to each page. Count sites, not total links. Fifty links from one site count as one site.
- Look at link quality. Are the links from relevant, real sites? Use my guide on how to check whether a backlink is worth getting.
- Compare with your page. Is your content better, clearer and more useful? Is your site older or newer than theirs?
- Set a goal as a range. If the top pages have a similar number of linking sites, that gives you a rough target. Treat it as a guide, not a rule.
Tool numbers are estimates. No single tool sees every link on the web.
What matters more than the number
- Relevance. Links from sites in your field.
- Quality. Real sites with real readers.
- Variety. Different sites, not the same one many times.
- Natural growth. Links that build up over time, because people find your content useful.
What to do before building links
Links do not fix a weak page. First make sure the page is indexed, answers the question and loads fast. My technical SEO checklist for WordPress helps with the basics.
Then build links with real value, such as helpful guest posts on relevant sites. I explain how in my guide to safe, white-hat guest posting. If you want help, see my link building and guest posting service.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a number instead of quality
- Counting many links from one site as many links
- Copying a competitor’s link list without checking quality
- Building links to a page that is not good enough yet
- Buying cheap bulk links
FAQ
Can I rank with no backlinks?
Yes, for less competitive searches. Good content and a healthy site can be enough. For competitive searches, links usually help.
Is 10 backlinks enough?
It depends. Ten strong, relevant links can matter more than a hundred weak ones. Check what the top pages have.
How fast do backlinks help?
There is no set time. Google has to find the link, and rankings can move slowly. Do not expect overnight results.
Should I count nofollow links?
You can note them, but focus on the quality of each link and how it helps real readers.
