Best AI Model for Semantic Search: How to Choose One

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 8 min read

Short answer: There is no single best AI model for semantic search. Semantic search uses an embedding model to turn text into vectors, and the best one depends on your language, content, budget and privacy needs. Pick a current model from a major provider or a strong open-source option, then test it on your own queries. Rankings change often.

In this guide

What the “model” does in semantic search

Semantic search finds results by meaning, not only by matching words. It usually has three parts:

  • An embedding model that turns your content and each query into numbers (vectors)
  • A vector search that finds the content closest in meaning to the query
  • A reranker (optional) that reorders the top results for better quality

When people ask for the “best AI model for semantic search”, they usually mean the embedding model. A chat model like ChatGPT is a different job: it writes answers. For the SEO side of semantic search, see my semantic SEO guide.

Models people use

These are well-known families of embedding models. This is a list of options, not a ranking:

  • OpenAI text-embedding-3 models (hosted API)
  • Google Gemini embedding models (hosted API)
  • Cohere Embed models (hosted API)
  • Voyage AI embedding models (hosted API)
  • BGE-M3 from BAAI (open weights, strong multilingual use)
  • Qwen3-Embedding from Alibaba (open weights)
  • NV-Embed from NVIDIA (open weights, English focus)

New models arrive often, and a list like this goes out of date. Check each provider’s current documentation before you decide.

How to choose

  • Language. If your content is not only English, pick a multilingual model and test your own languages.
  • Content type. Short product pages, long guides and code behave differently.
  • Cost and speed. Hosted APIs charge per use. Open models are free to download but need hardware.
  • Privacy. If your data is sensitive, check where it is sent and how it is stored, or self-host.
  • Context length and vector size. Longer inputs and larger vectors can improve results, but they cost more to store and search.

How to test one

Public leaderboards, such as the MTEB benchmark, are a good starting point. But a model at the top of a leaderboard is not always best for your content. Test it yourself:

  1. Collect 30 to 50 real queries from your users or your search logs.
  2. For each query, write down which pages or answers should come first.
  3. Run two or three candidate models on the same content.
  4. Check whether the right result appears in the top five.
  5. Compare cost and speed, then choose the simplest model that does the job.

What about Google and ChatGPT?

You cannot choose the models that Google Search or ChatGPT use. They are chosen by the companies. What you can control is your content: clear writing, a complete topic and a crawlable site. See whether ChatGPT uses semantic search and how to write content that search engines understand.

FAQ

Is an embedding model the same as ChatGPT?

No. An embedding model turns text into vectors for matching. A chat model generates text. Many systems use both: one to find sources, one to write the answer.

Do I need a vector database?

For a small site, you can start with a simple setup. For a large collection of documents, a vector database or a search engine with vector support is usually needed.

Is semantic search better than keyword search?

Not always. Exact terms, such as product codes or names, work well with keyword search. Many good systems combine both.

Does a WordPress site need semantic search?

Not by default. The built-in search is keyword-based. A plugin or hosted search service can add semantic search, so check how it handles your data and what it costs.
