Short answer: To teach yourself SEO, learn the basics from Google’s own documentation, set up a real website, connect Google Search Console, and practice on it every week. Learn four areas in order: technical SEO, on-page SEO, content and links. You can build a solid foundation in about 12 weeks, but real skill comes from practice and patience.

Where to start
SEO means helping search engines understand your pages and helping people find them. Before you read anything advanced, understand three ideas:
- Search engines crawl, index and rank pages. If a page is not crawled or indexed, nothing else matters.
- Search intent decides what ranks. A page must match what the searcher wants. See search intent in SEO.
- Nobody can guarantee rankings. Be careful of anyone who does.
A 12-week plan
Weeks 1-2: The basics
Read Google’s SEO Starter Guide in Search Central. Learn how crawling, indexing and ranking work. Create a simple website, such as a WordPress site about a topic you know. A real site teaches more than any course.
Weeks 3-4: Search Console and tracking
Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit a sitemap and learn the Performance and Pages reports. Start with the Google Search Console guide.
Weeks 5-6: Technical SEO
Learn robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects, HTTPS and page speed. See the technical SEO checklist for WordPress and how to do an SEO audit.
Weeks 7-8: On-page SEO and keyword research
Learn titles, headings, URLs, images and internal links, and how to find keywords that match intent. See the on-page SEO checklist.
Weeks 9-10: Content
Write helpful pages for real questions. Plan them with a brief, add your own examples and update them over time. See how to plan an SEO content brief.
Weeks 11-12: Links and AI search
Learn what makes a backlink valuable and how to earn links without spam. Then learn how AI search tools use pages. See what makes a backlink high quality and how to optimize for AI search.
Free resources
- Google Search Central documentation, the official source for how Google Search works
- Google Search Console, free data from your own site
- Bing Webmaster Tools, a second view of crawling and indexing
- Free courses from SEO tool companies, useful, but remember they also sell tools
- Case studies and talks from working SEOs, read with a critical eye
Use official sources first. Use blogs, courses and videos to explain and extend them, and check anything surprising against the documentation.
How to practice
- Build your own site and test ideas on it.
- Keep a simple log: what you changed, the date and what happened.
- Run a mini audit on a friend’s or a family business site, with their permission.
- Rewrite one weak page each week and watch it in Search Console.
- Learn one tool at a time. A spreadsheet and Search Console are enough at first.

Mistakes to avoid
- Learning only theory and never testing on a real site
- Trusting guaranteed-ranking claims or “secret tricks”
- Buying links or using spam shortcuts. They put your site at risk
- Copying what a tool tells you without checking the real search results
- Changing many things at once, so you cannot tell what worked
- Expecting results in days. SEO usually takes time
FAQ
How long does it take to learn SEO?
You can learn the basics in a few weeks. Getting good takes months of practice, and the field keeps changing.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Basic HTML helps with technical SEO, but you can start without it.
Do I need paid tools?
No. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a spreadsheet are enough to start. Add tools later when you know what you need.
Can I get a job from self-taught SEO?
It is possible. A real site, a clear log of what you did and honest case notes show more than a certificate. I cannot promise a job.
Prefer to have an expert do it? I audit your site, fix the technical issues and give you a clear plan. See my SEO and technical SEO service.
