Short answer: No, they are not the same. Technical SEO is about how your site is built and accessed: crawling, indexing, speed, HTTPS and structured data. On-page SEO is about what is on each page: content, titles, headings, internal links and images. You need both, and technical problems should be fixed first because they can stop pages from being found at all.
In this guide: 1. What technical SEO covers | 2. What on-page SEO covers | 3. Side by side | 4. Which to fix first | FAQ
1. What technical SEO covers
Technical SEO helps search engines crawl, index and understand your site. Typical tasks:
- robots.txt and XML sitemap
- Indexing settings, canonical tags and noindex tags
- Redirects and broken links
- Page speed and Core Web Vitals
- HTTPS and mobile usability
- Structured data (schema)
My technical SEO checklist for WordPress covers these in order.
2. What on-page SEO covers
On-page SEO makes each page clear and useful for a reader and a search engine. Typical tasks:
- One topic and one primary keyword per page
- Title tag and meta description
- One H1 and logical subheadings
- A direct answer near the top
- Internal links with descriptive anchor text
- Image alt text
See my on-page SEO checklist for the details.
3. Side by side
- Question it answers: technical SEO asks “Can search engines reach and understand my site?” On-page SEO asks “Does this page answer what people search for?”
- Where the work happens: technical SEO is mostly settings, code and server. On-page SEO is mostly content and page elements.
- Typical problem: a page that is blocked from indexing (technical) versus a page with a vague title and no clear answer (on-page).
4. Which should you fix first?
Start with technical SEO if pages are not indexed, the site is slow or you recently moved or redesigned it. A great page cannot rank if search engines cannot index it. Then improve on-page SEO page by page, starting with the pages that matter most to your business. If you want help with both, see my technical SEO and on-page SEO service.
FAQ
Is technical SEO more important than on-page SEO?
Neither replaces the other. Technical SEO makes sure your pages can be found. On-page SEO makes sure they are worth finding.
Is page speed technical or on-page?
It is usually treated as technical SEO, although images and content on the page affect it.
Is schema markup technical or on-page?
It sits between the two. It is code added to the page, so it is often grouped under technical SEO.
Can I do both myself?
Yes, for a small site. Use the checklists above. For larger sites or complex indexing problems, an expert review can save time.
Not sure where your site stands? I review technical and on-page issues and send a clear list of fixes. See my technical SEO services.
