Short answer: Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of people who click your result after seeing it in search. To improve it, find pages with many impressions but few clicks in Search Console, then rewrite their titles and meta descriptions to match what the searcher wants, be specific and honest, and add helpful details. Google may still rewrite your snippet, and no change guarantees more clicks.
In this guide
Find pages to improve
- Open Search Console and go to Performance.
- Look at the Pages and Queries tabs for items with many impressions and a low CTR.
- Start with pages that are already near the top of the results.
7 ways to improve CTR
- Match search intent. The title should promise what the searcher wants. See search intent.
- Put the main keyword near the start of the title, naturally.
- Be specific. “7 steps” or “with examples” beats a vague title.
- Write a useful meta description. Say what the reader gets, in about 150 characters. See the on-page SEO checklist.
- Keep titles from being cut off. Around 60 characters is a common guide.
- Use accurate structured data where it applies, since rich results can stand out.
- Do not use clickbait. A promise the page does not keep leads to people leaving.

How to measure it
- Change one page at a time and note the date
- Compare CTR for the same page over a few weeks before and after
- Remember that rankings, seasons and AI features also change CTR
Common mistakes
- Changing many things at once
- Stuffing keywords in the title
- Misleading titles
- Judging after a few days
- Ignoring that Google may rewrite your title
FAQ
What is a good CTR?
It varies by position, query and result type. Compare your own pages against each other instead of a fixed number.
Does CTR affect rankings?
Google has not confirmed that it works as a simple ranking factor. A better CTR still brings more visitors.
Why does Google change my title?
It may rewrite a title if it thinks another version fits the search better.
How long until I see a change?
Often several weeks, after Google recrawls the page.
Which pages should I fix first?
Pages with high impressions, a low CTR and a position near the top.
