Image SEO: How to Optimize Images for Google and Speed

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 7 min read

Short answer: Image SEO means making your images easy for search engines and people to understand. Use real image tags, descriptive file names, short alt text that describes the image, a modern format like WebP, and a file size that loads fast. Put the image near text that explains it. This helps your images appear in Google Images, but no step guarantees it.

Why image SEO matters

Images can bring visitors from Google Images, and they help people understand your page. Search engines cannot see an image the way you do. They rely on the text around it, the file name and the alt text. Good image SEO also helps accessibility, because screen readers read the alt text aloud.

7 image SEO steps

  1. Use a real image tag. Google says to use the HTML img element with a src attribute. Images added only through CSS backgrounds are not reliably indexed.
  2. Write helpful alt text. Describe what the image shows in a short, plain sentence. Example: “Hridoy Ahmed, SEO specialist, at his desk”. Do not stuff keywords.
  3. Use a descriptive file name. Name the file before you upload it, for example wordpress-security-checklist.webp, not IMG_4829.jpg.
  4. Choose a good format. WebP gives small files with good quality. Google supports formats such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG and AVIF.
  5. Compress and size correctly. Do not upload a 4000 px photo to show at 800 px. Large images slow the page and hurt Core Web Vitals. See my guide to optimizing images in WordPress.
  6. Place the image near relevant text. Google uses the page content around an image to understand it. Add a short caption or a sentence that explains it.
  7. Do not block images. Make sure your robots.txt does not block your image folder, and that the image URL opens normally.

How to do it in WordPress

  1. Rename the file before upload.
  2. Upload it to the Media Library and fill in the Alt Text field. Leave alt text empty only for purely decorative images.
  3. Add a caption if it helps the reader.
  4. Use a plugin or your host to convert and compress images to WebP.
  5. Do not lazy-load the main image at the top of the page. Lazy-loading the largest visible image can slow your Largest Contentful Paint.
  6. Check that your sitemap plugin includes images. Rank Math can include them in its sitemap.

How to check your images

  • Search Console: in the Performance report, set the search type to Image to see impressions and clicks from Google Images.
  • Google search: search site:yourdomain.com and open the Images tab to see which images are indexed.
  • PageSpeed Insights: check for oversized images and next-gen format warnings.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving alt text empty on important images
  • Stuffing keywords into alt text
  • Uploading huge original photos
  • Using text inside an image instead of real text on the page
  • Using stock or copied images without checking you have the right to use them
  • Lazy-loading the main hero image

FAQ

What is image SEO?

It is the practice of making images easy for search engines to find and understand, and fast for people to load.

Does alt text help SEO?

Yes. Alt text helps search engines understand an image and helps people who use screen readers. Write it for people first.

Which image format is best for SEO?

WebP is a good choice for most photos because the files are small. The best format is one that looks good, loads fast and is supported by browsers and Google.

How can my photo appear in Google Images?

Use a real image tag, a clear alt text and file name, place it on a crawlable page with relevant text, and make sure it is not blocked. Google decides what to show.

How long does it take for images to be indexed?

It varies. Images are usually indexed after the page is crawled, which can take days or weeks.
