How to Improve LCP, INP and CLS on WordPress

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 8 min read

Short answer: Core Web Vitals measure loading (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS). Good values are LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less. Improve LCP by optimizing the main image and server response, INP by reducing heavy JavaScript and CLS by reserving space for images and embeds.

In this guide: What they are | LCP | INP | CLS | How to check | Common mistakes | FAQ

Core Web Vitals are Google’s measures of real-user experience. INP replaced the older FID metric in 2024. Google assesses them with real-user data, so lab tests are only a guide. For a wider look at what slows a site, read why a WordPress site is slow. My earlier overview is here: Optimizing for Core Web Vitals.

LCP: Largest Contentful Paint

LCP is how long the biggest visible element takes to load, often a hero image or a heading. Target: 2.5 seconds or less.

  • Compress and resize the main image, and use a modern format
  • Do not lazy-load the main image at the top of the page
  • Use page caching and a fast server
  • Reduce render-blocking CSS and JavaScript

INP: Interaction to Next Paint

INP measures how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Target: 200 milliseconds or less.

  • Remove or delay scripts you do not need
  • Reduce third-party scripts such as chat widgets and trackers
  • Avoid heavy animations and large page builder pages
  • Keep plugins that run scripts on every page to a minimum

CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift

CLS measures how much the page jumps as it loads. Target: 0.1 or less.

  • Set width and height on images and videos
  • Reserve space for ads, embeds and banners
  • Load fonts in a way that avoids sudden text shifts
  • Do not insert content above content that is already visible

How to check your results

Use the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console and the field data in PageSpeed Insights. Field data uses a rolling window of about 28 days, so improvements take time to show.

Common mistakes

  • Relying only on lab scores
  • Lazy-loading the main image
  • Adding a cookie banner or popup that shifts the page
  • Expecting instant changes in field data

FAQ

Do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?

They are part of Google’s page experience signals, but content relevance matters more. Treat them as a way to improve user experience.

Why does my lab score differ from Search Console?

Lab data is one simulated test. Search Console uses real users over time.

Can a page builder pass Core Web Vitals?

Yes, if the pages are built carefully and kept light.
