Short answer: Cloudflare is a service that sits between your visitors and your server. On its free plan it can cache static files on servers near your visitors, add basic protection and give you DNS and SSL features. Done right, it can make a WordPress site faster and safer. Done wrong, it can break your site, so set it up carefully and test.
In this guide
What Cloudflare does
- CDN: serves images, CSS and JavaScript from a location closer to the visitor
- DNS: manages your domain records
- Security: filters some bad traffic and can add a firewall
- SSL: works with HTTPS on your site
It does not fix a slow theme or huge images. Speed also depends on your hosting and your images.
How to set it up
- Create a free Cloudflare account and add your domain.
- Cloudflare scans your DNS records. Compare them with your current records and fix any missing ones.
- Change the nameservers at your domain registrar to the two Cloudflare gives you.
- Wait until Cloudflare shows the site as active. This can take from minutes to hours.
- Check that your site loads over HTTPS.

Settings to check
- SSL/TLS mode: use Full (strict) when your server has a valid certificate. The Flexible mode can cause redirect loops.
- Caching: do not cache the WordPress admin or logged-in pages. Use the Cloudflare plugin or rules that exclude them.
- Minify and similar options: turn on one at a time and test, since they can break scripts.
- Purge the cache after you change your site.
Common mistakes
- Wrong SSL mode, causing redirect loops
- Caching admin pages
- Turning on every optimization at once
- Forgetting to clear the cache after updates
- Expecting Cloudflare to fix a slow server
FAQ
Is Cloudflare free?
There is a free plan with the main CDN and DNS features. Paid plans add more.
Does Cloudflare help SEO?
Indirectly. A faster, more reliable site can help users and crawling.
Will Cloudflare break my WordPress site?
It can if configured wrongly. Test after setup, and change one setting at a time.
Do I still need a caching plugin?
Often yes. They do different jobs. See WP Rocket vs LiteSpeed Cache.
Can I remove Cloudflare later?
Yes, by pointing your nameservers back to your host.
