Short answer: A good guest post pitch is a short email that shows you read the site, offers two or three specific article ideas, and proves you can write. Do not ask for a link in the first email, and never send the same message to everyone. Below are two templates you can copy: a first pitch and a follow-up. No pitch guarantees a reply.

Before you pitch
- Pick relevant sites. The site should cover your topic and have real readers. See how to check whether a backlink is worth getting.
- Read the guidelines. Many sites have a “write for us” page. Follow its rules on topics, length and links.
- Read recent posts. Do not pitch a topic they already covered.
- Find the right person. Look for the editor or content manager, not a generic info address.
- Prepare samples. Have two or three links to your best writing.
Be aware of Google’s rules. Its spam policies warn against link schemes, including large-scale guest posting campaigns that use keyword-heavy anchor text. Write guest posts to help readers and build your name. If a link is paid for, it should be marked as sponsored or nofollow. For the bigger picture, read my guide on white-hat guest posting.
What a good pitch contains
| Part | What to write |
|---|---|
| Subject line | Clear and specific. Say it is a guest post idea |
| Opening | One line that shows you read their site |
| Ideas | Two or three specific titles with a short reason each |
| Why you | One or two lines on your experience |
| Samples | Links to 2 or 3 published pieces |
| Close | A simple question and a thank-you |
Keep the whole email under about 150 words. Editors read many pitches a day.

Template 2: follow-up
Subject: Re: Guest post idea for [SITE NAME]: [TOPIC]
Hi [EDITOR NAME],

Subject line ideas
- Guest post idea for [SITE NAME]: [TOPIC]
- Article idea: [TITLE]
- Contribution for [SITE NAME] on [TOPIC]
- Question about your guest post guidelines
Avoid vague lines like “Collaboration” or “Quick question”. They look like spam.
Common mistakes
- Sending the same email to everyone. Editors can tell.
- Asking for a link in the first email. Offer value first.
- Pitching off-topic ideas. It shows you did not read the site.
- Writing a long message. Short pitches get read.
- Ignoring the guidelines. It gets your email deleted.
- Offering a thin article. A guest post must be useful on its own.
- Chasing only high-authority sites. Relevance matters more than a big name. See what makes a backlink high quality.
FAQ
How long should a guest post pitch be?
Under about 150 words is a good aim. Be clear and brief.
Should I send the full article or an idea first?
Send ideas first, unless the site’s guidelines ask for a full draft.
Should I mention a link in the pitch?
You can say your bio will include your site. Do not ask for keyword anchor text in the first email.
How many follow-ups should I send?
One is enough. After that, move on to another site.
Is guest posting still safe for SEO?
It can be when you write useful content for relevant sites. Large-scale guest posting for keyword links goes against Google’s spam policies.
