Short answer: Use the built-in block editor (Gutenberg) if you want a light, simple site and are happy with a structured layout. Use Elementor if you want full visual control and drag-and-drop design. Other builders like Divi, Beaver Builder and Bricks also work well. The best choice depends on your skills, your budget and how much speed matters, because how you build counts as much as which tool you use.
What is a page builder?
A page builder lets you design pages visually, without writing code. You drag blocks like text, images, buttons and columns into place and see the result as you work. WordPress already comes with one: the block editor, also called Gutenberg.
The main options in plain words
- Gutenberg (block editor): built into WordPress and free. Lightweight, great for blog posts and simple pages. Layout control is more limited unless you use a block theme or add a block plugin.
- Elementor: a popular visual builder with a free version and a paid Pro version. Easy for beginners and very flexible. Pro adds features like a theme builder and a form widget.
- Divi: a theme and builder from Elegant Themes. It is paid, and it has its own system and style.
- Beaver Builder: known for a clean, simple interface. It has a limited free version and paid plans.
- Bricks: a newer, developer-friendly builder that is sold as a theme. It is paid.
Prices and features change, so check each tool’s website before you buy.
How to choose
- Think about who will edit the site. If you want to change pages yourself with a drag-and-drop screen, a visual builder like Elementor is easier. If you mostly write posts, Gutenberg is enough.
- Set your budget. Gutenberg is free. Elementor has a useful free version. Some builders need a paid licence from day one.
- Think about speed. A visual builder usually adds extra code on top of WordPress, so a simple site built with blocks tends to be lighter. But a careful build with any tool can be fast, and a careless build with any tool can be slow. See my guide on Elementor mistakes that slow your website.
- Think about lock-in. If you stop using a builder, the pages built with it often need rebuilding. Gutenberg content is easier to move.
- Check the support. Pick a tool that updates often and has good documentation.
My own approach
This website is built with the free version of Elementor and a free theme. I chose it for design control and speed of work, and I keep the page code light. If you want a similar build for your business, see my WordPress website design service.
Which one for which project?
- Blog or content-heavy site: Gutenberg
- Small business or portfolio site where you want custom looks: Elementor or a similar builder
- Agency or developer who wants deep control: a developer-friendly tool like Bricks, or a custom block setup
- You want the simplest long-term setup: Gutenberg with a lightweight theme
Whatever you choose, pair it with a fast theme. Read how to choose a fast, SEO-friendly WordPress theme.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a builder only because it looks popular
- Installing two builders on the same site
- Adding many heavy effects, sliders and animations
- Not thinking about what happens if you switch later
- Ignoring speed until after launch
FAQ
Do page builders hurt SEO?
Not by themselves. Slow pages can hurt, and builders can add extra code if used carelessly. A clean build keeps pages fast and easy to crawl.
Is Gutenberg good enough for a business site?
Often yes, especially with a good block theme. If you want very custom layouts without code, a visual builder is easier.
Do I need Elementor Pro?
Not always. The free version can build good pages. Pro is useful if you need things like a theme builder or built-in forms.
Can I switch builders later?
Yes, but pages usually need to be rebuilt. Choose with the long term in mind.
