What Makes a Backlink High Quality?

By Hridoy Ahmed | Last updated: October 2026 | 6 min read

Short answer: A high quality backlink comes from a relevant website with a real audience, is placed naturally inside useful content, and was earned for a good reason. Relevance, editorial placement and real traffic matter more than a DA or DR score. Be careful with links that are sold in bulk.

In this guide: Relevance | Real audience | Editorial placement | Anchor text | Authority scores | Dofollow and nofollow | Red flags | Common mistakes | FAQ

Not all backlinks are equal. One link from a respected site in your field can be worth more than hundreds of random links. Here is how I judge a link.

1. Relevance

The linking site should cover a topic close to yours. A link from a marketing blog to an SEO page makes sense. A link from a cooking blog to a WordPress security page does not. Relevance helps search engines and readers understand why the link exists.

2. A real audience

A good site has real readers. Check if it has regular content, a visible audience and genuine engagement. A site that exists only to sell links usually has none of these.

3. Editorial placement

The best links sit inside the main content of a useful page, where an editor chose to include them. Links hidden in footers, sidebars or at the end of bulk-published posts have less value.

4. Natural anchor text

Anchor text is the clickable text. Natural anchors are your brand name, the page title or a plain description. Repeating the same exact keyword across many links looks manipulated.

5. Authority scores are only a guide

DA, DR and similar scores come from third-party tools. Google does not use them. They can help you compare sites quickly, but do not let one number decide.

6. Dofollow and nofollow

Google treats nofollow and similar attributes as hints. A nofollow link from a respected site can still bring visitors and brand awareness. A natural link profile has a mix.

Red flags

  • The site openly sells links or guest posts in bulk
  • Content on unrelated topics, written for links only
  • Many outbound links to unrelated sites on one page
  • No real traffic or readers
  • Part of a network of similar sites

Common mistakes

  • Choosing links by DA alone
  • Buying link packages with no site list
  • Using exact keyword anchors every time
  • Ignoring relevance because the price is low

FAQ

Are nofollow links useless?

No. They may not pass ranking signals the same way, but they can bring traffic and mentions.

How many backlinks do I need?

It depends on your competition. Compare the sites ranking for your target keywords.

Can a bad backlink hurt me?

Google says it is good at ignoring spammy links. A large pattern of manipulative links can still cause problems.
